Alpine is approximately 30 miles to the east of downtown San Diego with 26.9 square miles of land area. As of the year 2000, the population of this community in the mountains was 13,143. The Kumeyaay Indians, who discovered Alpine 1,000 years prior, are still residents to this day. At an elevation of 4000 feet, the climate in Alpine is ideal for people that suffer from asthma. According to a survey done by the U.S. Government, Alpine has the most ideal climate in the United States. If locals were to be asked what else is there in this small tourist spot besides their apple orchards and the best apple pies, the town slogan “Best Climate in the U.S.A. by a Government Report” is the reply that would be received.
The look and feel of Alpine is western-style. Some of the real estate in this beautiful, quaint town is small ranch homes on slopes of hills that are covered with shrubs. Other real estate is on spacious vacant lots zoned for horse properties.
There are plenty of commercial businesses to fit every need of residents and visitors alike. A major attraction for locals and visitors to Alpine is the Viejas Casino. It offers Las Vegas-like gambling and put on shows with some of the big names in the entertainment business. For some people who visit Viejas Casino and are not so much into the gambling scene, there is plenty of shopping for brand name clothing, shoes and much more at the outlet stores located on the same grounds.
